What softening takes out

Four things vanish when an answer is smoothed: the ranking between options, the specific number, the named trade-off, and the statement of what the writer would do. All 4 are the parts you came for, and all 4 are the parts that could be wrong, which is why they go first.

Softening is usually described as tone, and tone is not what changes. What changes is which claims survive, and the claims that survive are the ones nobody could be blamed for.

The ranking goes first

Three options presented as a list are safe. The same 3 options with the first option marked as the usual choice commit the writer to something. Ranking is the highest-value part of most answers and the easiest to remove without the paragraph looking damaged.

Numbers turn into ranges, then into words

A specific figure can be checked and can be wrong. A range is harder to fault, and a phrase such as considerable cannot be faulted at all. Watch a softened answer for this progression, because it usually happens in the same sentence where the useful figure should have been.

Trade-offs become considerations

A trade-off names what you give up to get something. A consideration names a topic. The first is a statement about the world and the second is a heading. Replacing the first with the second removes the content while keeping the structure, which is why softened answers look complete.

Asking the 4 back

Request them by name rather than asking for directness in general. Ask which option you would pick, ask for a number rather than a range, ask what is given up in exchange, and ask what would change the recommendation. Each request restores 1 of the 4 removed parts, and specific requests survive softening better than a general request for bluntness.

Reasonable questions

Is a softened answer wrong?

Rarely wrong, and rarely usable. That combination is the point: correctness was preserved and usefulness was spent to buy it.

Does asking for brutal honesty work?

It changes tone more than substance on most services. Asking for the ranking and the number works better, because those are concrete outputs rather than a style.

Why do some subjects get softened more?

The subjects where a wrong answer is expensive to the operator: health, law, money, safety. Softening tracks exposure rather than difficulty.

Ask for the ranking and the number, and see what comes back.
